The future of cross-border cooperation at the Romania-Ukraine border (2021-2027)

The European Union legislative structures have started drafting proposals for the next programming period.
All cross-border cooperation programmes will be included under the European Territorial Cooperation objective (INTERREG) and a larger financial allocation is foreseen compared to the 2014-2020 programming period.
With regard to cross-border cooperation between Romania and Ukraine, the future cross-border cooperation programmes will be funded by the ERDF and a new external financing instrument – the Neighborhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument (NDICI). This new instrument will replace the European Neighborhood Instrument (ENI).
The list of Interreg programmes to receive financial support will be contained in an implementing act to be adopted by the European Commission.
The draft Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on “specific provisions for the European territorial cooperation goal (Interreg) supported by the European Regional Development Fund and external funding instruments”, issued on 29 May 2018, is available here AICI.
