The Interreg NEXT Romania–Ukraine Programme has reached another important milestone with the completion of the grant contracting process for 81 projects. With a total value of EUR 66,583,171.15, including EUR 59,453,226.49 in EU non-reimbursable funding, the Programme directly supports border communities and their sustainable development.

The projects will bring benefits across the Programme area, covering the counties of Satu Mare, Maramureș, Botoșani, Suceava and Tulcea in Romania, as well as the regions of Ivano-Frankivsk, Zakarpattia, Chernivtsi and Odesa in Ukraine.

EU funding is being channelled into concrete initiatives, supporting cooperation among more than 200 partner institutions and organisations on both sides of the border:

• Environment, climate change adaptation and risk prevention: 57 organisations from Romania and Ukraine are working together on 20 projects, benefiting from EUR 23,168,582.89 in EU funding for emergency response equipment, disaster prevention and practical environmental protection measures.
• Biodiversity protection: 13 organisations are implementing 6 joint projects, supported by EUR 2,217,438.05 in EU funding, focusing on the protection of nature and local ecosystems, as well as the development of green spaces.
• Inclusive education and training: 64 organisations from the education sector are implementing 24 projects, with EUR 12,362,165.60 in EU support for the modernisation of schools, digital equipment and improved equal access to education.
• Health and modernised medical services: 27 healthcare organisations have secured EUR 9,311,920.15 in EU funding through 10 projects, supporting the acquisition of new medical equipment and the improvement of healthcare services for local communities.
• Good governance and administrative cooperation: 47 organisations are working together through 16 projects, supported by EUR 10,448,261.57 in EU funding, to simplify administrative procedures and build stronger partnerships between institutions on both sides of the border.
• Border management and mobility: 11 organisations are implementing 5 projects focused on safety and efficiency at the border, benefiting from EUR 1,944,858.23 in EU funding to facilitate traffic flows and improve border-crossing conditions.

With all contracts now signed, the projects will begin to deliver tangible benefits for communities across the border, contributing to improved services and infrastructure that matter in people’s everyday lives. These include better-equipped hospitals, modernised schools and learning spaces, better-prepared emergency response teams, and more efficient border crossing points.

At the same time, the implementation of these projects is laying the foundations for lasting partnerships between public administrations, schools, hospitals and non-governmental organisations in Romania and Ukraine, strengthening cross-border cooperation and contributing to more connected, resilient and better-prepared communities.
